Round 2 of the FIA CODASUR South American Rally Championship for 2026 recently took place in Argentina following the season’s kick-off in Brazil. The event saw driver Didier Arias and co-driver Héctor Núñez involved in a serious accident when their car rolled into a spectator area after hitting a dirt mound during the competition. While both Arias and Núñez emerged unscathed, the crash caused injuries to multiple spectators and tragically led to one fatality when a spectator was hit by the airborne rally car.
The FIA expressed deep sadness over the incident and offered condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased, along with support for those injured. The organization commended the emergency services and medical teams for their swift response and assured full cooperation with the event organizers and local authorities in investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
This unfortunate event adds to a somber weekend in motorsports, with the loss of driver Juha Miettinen in a multi-car crash at the Nurburgring on the previous day. The incidents serve as reminders of the risks involved in the sport and underscore the importance of safety measures and precautions to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
