Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) has announced an expansion of its partnership with OpenAI, with OpenAI serving as a primary sponsor for two rounds during the 2026 season of the IndyCar Series. OpenAI, a prominent AI research and deployment company, will be the main sponsor for reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou’s #10 Honda at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach this weekend, followed by the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. in August. This collaboration is significant as Long Beach is considered a home race for OpenAI, and Palou has had success at this track in the past. Furthermore, OpenAI has been actively involved with CGR for the past two seasons, providing technical expertise both on and off the track. Their cutting-edge AI tools have helped CGR analyze race data, improve communication, and make quicker decisions, ultimately enhancing the team’s on-track performance. Chip Ganassi, the team owner, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in pushing the team to new heights. In addition to sponsoring races, OpenAI has also hired Rob Wills, director of Netflix’s Formula 1: Drive to Survive, to lead a documentary project showcasing CGR’s journey in the IndyCar Series with the support of OpenAI tools. Sarah Russell, Head of Integrated Marketing at OpenAI, highlighted the innovative ways in which AI is being used to empower teams and enhance performance in motorsports. This partnership between CGR and OpenAI represents a cutting-edge approach to leveraging AI in the world of racing, opening up new possibilities for future collaborations and advancements in the sport.
