McLaren’s team chief, Andrea Stella, has expressed optimism about the team’s performance at the Japanese Grand Prix and the possibility of challenging Ferrari for a podium spot. The season started off poorly for McLaren with only one grand prix start from Lando Norris in Australia. However, things took a turn for the better at the Suzuka circuit, with Oscar Piastri qualifying in third place and Norris securing a fifth-place start.
Stella credits this progress to improvements in chassis, set-up, and the power unit. Despite the advancements, Stella remains realistic about McLaren’s chances against Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton set to start from fourth and sixth positions. While he would be surprised if McLaren can secure a podium finish, he acknowledges the team’s progress and determination to keep pushing for improvements and upgrades in the upcoming races.
