Alex Palou experienced an early crash during the Good Ranchers 250 at Phoenix Raceway, destroying his hopes of victory. The reigning and four-time IndyCar Series champion collided with Rinus VeeKay’s #76 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet, bringing an end to his race after just 22 laps on the 1-mile tri-oval.
Starting 10th on the grid, Palou’s #10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda quickly ascended into the top three. However, a restart on Lap 19 saw him lose positions to Graham Rahal’s #15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda and VeeKay. The collision between Palou and VeeKay occurred as the latter attempted a pass on the high line, resulting in Palou’s right-front slamming into the outside wall.
Despite the incident, VeeKay was able to continue racing, although he expressed frustration at the belief that Palou had squeezed him into the contact. Running five laps down in 23rd place, VeeKay also suspected potential suspension damage due to steering issues.
Palou expressed uncertainty regarding the incident, mentioning the need to review a replay to understand if there was enough space for VeeKay to attempt the pass. Both drivers were disappointed at the premature end to their race but acknowledged the risks that come with competitive racing.
