President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship programs, including Free Nutritious Meals (Makan Bergizi Gratis / MBG), People’s School (Sekolah Rakyat), and the Merah Putih Village/Urban Cooperatives (Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih / Kopdes), are gaining recognition as “express lanes” aimed at accelerating the eradication of poverty. These initiatives have the potential to not only reduce poverty but also create significant job opportunities and promote economic independence. Head of the Poverty Eradication Acceleration Agency (BP Taskin), Budiman Sudjatmiko, emphasized the President’s goal of empowering individuals to become economically self-reliant, rather than just providing social assistance. He likened the government’s role to ensuring that the ball moves smoothly from defense to attack in a football game, with the ultimate objective being the eradication of poverty.
The Sekolah Rakyat program, which is based on boarding schools, aims to break the cycle of poverty, while MBG and Kopdes Merah Putih focus on delivering economic benefits to entire communities. These initiatives are expected to create millions of jobs, benefiting sectors such as farmers, SMEs, and village-owned enterprises. Nanik S. Deyang, Deputy Head of BP Taskin, highlighted how these programs offer tangible hope for independence to poor households by providing improved access to education and economic opportunities. She mentioned the positive impact of MBG and Kopdes Merah Putih on local producers and communities, citing examples of increased employment in small tofu-and-tempeh factories and improved access to affordable credit for farmers.
Kopdes Merah Putih plays a crucial role in streamlining supply chains and reducing costs by eliminating intermediaries. The cooperatives enable fair pricing for essential goods like LPG cylinders and provide farmers with access to affordable fertilizers without the need for multiple layers of agents and cooperatives. By offering capital on favorable terms, Kopdes also helps individuals avoid predatory lending practices and promotes financial inclusion. These programs showcase a holistic approach to poverty eradication, emphasizing education, economic empowerment, and community development.
