The Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan (Village/Urban Village Cooperative) Merah Putih, launched as part of President Prabowo Subianto’s efforts to strengthen rural economies and enhance the welfare of village communities in Indonesia, signifies a significant milestone in village-based national development. Adita Irawati, Senior Advisor at the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), emphasized the program’s role in empowering villages to manage their resources independently. This initiative, introduced on Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, aims to achieve “economic independence” for rural communities, transitioning from reliance on social assistance to sustainable economic empowerment. Despite facing challenges in meeting fundamental needs and driving local economies, such as inadequate storage for fish catch and high levels of debt among micro, small, and medium enterprises, the initiative seeks to address these issues by establishing 80,081 Kopdes Merah Putih cooperatives nationwide. President Prabowo highlighted the program’s objectives of job creation, entrepreneurship promotion, and local production center reinforcement to foster self-reliant and equitable economic growth in rural areas. The impact of the Kopdes Merah Putih is already evident in Cileunyi Wetan village, Bandung regency, where residents no longer need to travel long distances for basic necessities and are freed from informal lenders’ debt traps. Emphasizing the importance of cooperative participation, Dedi Nurendi, head of the Kopdes Merah Putih in Cileunyi Wetan, encourages community members to join cooperatives, emphasizing their role in addressing economic needs and promoting mutual cooperation.
