President Prabowo Subianto is being applauded for his recent decision to grant amnesty and abolition to PDI-P Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto and businessman Tom Lembong, which is seen as a significant step towards national reconciliation. Senior politician Fahri Hamzah praised President Prabowo’s wisdom and quick response to address societal divisions before Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day. The move has been interpreted as a signal to end social polarization and start a broader reconciliation process, with House Speaker Prof. Sufmi Dasco Ahmad showing support for the decision. Fahri commended President Prabowo’s use of constitutional prerogative as a positive development, especially in light of efforts by certain groups to create disunity. The amnesty for 1,116 convicted individuals, including Hasto Kristiyanto, was approved by the Indonesian House of Representatives based on Presidential Letter No. 42/Pres/072725, issued on July 30, 2025. Amnesty and abolition are tools within the President’s prerogative rights under the Indonesian Constitution, designed to undo legal consequences of criminal convictions. This decision reflects a genuine effort to bring the nation together and restore societal harmony in the midst of challenges of fragmentation.
