Jakarta – The Indonesian Advocates Alliance appointed presidential candidate number 2, Prabowo Subianto, as a Pro Bono figure, which is a legal act or service performed for the benefit of the public or for those who cannot afford it without charge.
This award was given to Prabowo because he had helped Wilfrida Soik, an Indonesian migrant worker who was freed from the threat of the death penalty in Malaysia.
“Pak Prabowo is a general, a businessman, not a lawyer. But what he did goes beyond our duties. He helped Wilfrida not only by hiring a lawyer but also by going to Malaysia 6 times,” said the Chairman of the Indonesian Advocate Alliance, Otto Hasibuan during the declaration of support for Prabowo-Gibran at Balai Kartini, South Jakarta, on Friday (26/1/2024).
Otto further said that this is an example for all of them, Indonesian advocates and entrepreneurs.
“What you did encourages us to do better because we all agree to see a Pro Bono figure in Indonesia, and we appointed you as a Pro Bono figure in Indonesia,” said Otto.
In response, Prabowo admitted that he actually did not deserve to receive this award. “Actually, the lawyer from Malaysia (the lawyer hired by Prabowo) should receive this award because at that time he did not want to be paid, but because of the dignity of Indonesia, I still paid him,” said Prabowo.
He also said that he initially helped Wilfrida because he received a report from a female activist, who knew that he had a good relationship with Malaysia.
“At that time, someone reported to me that there was a migrant worker in Kelantan who was sentenced, and they asked if I could help. That’s when I got involved, and until now I believe that if we can help someone, why not help them,” said Prabowo. (SENOPATI)
